Animal

Deep Research - Biomedical Research

Animal Research - The Office of Technology Assessment estimates that 17-23 million animals are used in the United States for research every year. The vast majority of these - about 95% - are rats and mice specifically bred for research. In 2000, there were 69,516 dogs and 25,560 cats used in research. By comparison, wildlife biologists estimate that over one million animals are killed every day by automobiles - over 365 million per year

Animal Research, The Payoffs - The oldest groups opposing animal research were formed in the 1890's. Had they succeeded in their mission to end all animal research, none of these Nobel-prize-winning medical breakthroughs would have been made. What other medical advances would we miss if animal research were banned today?

Biomedical Research Facts & Statistics - We see that our children are vaccinated against childhood diseases. We follow the news of medical breakthroughs: scientific findings about the causes and prevention of heart disease and cancer, drugs to treat serious diseases, surgical procedures to repair or replace vital organs or to correct birth defects, diagnostic tools and tests to pinpoint disease in the early and most treatable stages

Biomedical Research - Without It - The U.S. and Canada would experience over 1.5 million cases of rubella. over 400 times the current annual incidence of the disease. More than 40,000 people worldwide would have died, because the capability to perform heart transplants would not have been developed. There would be no hope of finding a safe and effective vaccine against AIDS. A cure for diabetes would be beyond reach.

Fact vs. Myth About the Essential Need For Animals in Medical Research - Animals play an amazing role in our lives. Whether they're assisting in search and rescue operations, working with police and fire investigators to solve a crime, or living in a setting that teaches us respect and appreciation for all species, animals make our world healthier, happier and safer. Still, it isn't always easy to reconcile our love and appreciation for animals and the essential need for animal research. Knowing that research animals are treated respectfully, responsibly and as humanely as strengthens our understanding - as does separating the facts from the myths.

Foundation for Biomedical Research - Established in 1981, the Foundation for Biomedical Research ( FBR ) is the nations oldest and largest organization dedicated to improving human and animal health by promoting public understanding and support for the humane and responsible use of animals in medical and scientific research.

Historical Myths About Animal Research - Animal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century - for both human and animal health. Animal activists who argue against animal research often take statements out of context to create the illusion that a particular scientist was opposed to animal research.

Major Religions On Animal Research - The use of animals for medical research is a complex scientific and moral issue. The views of the world's great religions on the use of animal experimentation for scientific purposes need to be brought to the attention of both scientists and animal protection groups.

Partners in Research - educate the public, especially primary and secondary school students, on issues relating to biomedicalbased health research - including its past history, recent advances in medical research, and the crucial role of biomedical research in all medical advances. Under "Facts", "Animals" "Advances", and "Timelines" are excellent information on Biomedical research.

What Scientists Say About Animal Research - The humane and responsible use of animals in medical and scientific research has the overwhelming support of scientists. A survey by the American Medical Association found that 99 percent of active physicians in the U.S. believed that animal research had contributed to medical progress, and 97 percent supported the continued use of animals for basic and clinical research.
